SingleSpeed-A-Palooza Cyclingdirt Coverage Is Up!

It took me a while but it is done. This video sort of captures the fun, flow, and fucking magic of Stewart State Forest and the SingleSpeed-A-Palooza course.
You'll have to sit through the end credits of the highlight vid if you want to witness perhaps the best karaoke version of ABBA's "Dancing Queen" ever performed.

The rest of the vids, including one of a not-so-magnificent karaoke version of Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O mine are RIGHT FREAKIN HERE DUDE.

Robocop Vs. Terminator Vs. Paul Revere Vs. Jack Black

This is going to be a speed blog, so please excuse typos, left out words, and trains of thought that go off the rails, fall into gorges hundreds of feet below, and burst into flames. I've thrown some images up here...I'm going to talk about them, and then I'm going to get the hell out of there and do lots of stuff. Real cool stuff.

Wow, Look At All The Awesome Stuff I Can Do!

This here, this is my demented idea of a resume page.

I am a multi-talented dude. I can travel, shoot video, write, blog, and conduct interviews. If I had a mutant power, it would be turning my own suffering into comedy. And suffering comes in all forms for me, from sitting next to loud eaters, to getting gored in the leg by a rhododendron bush. There's a gorgeous spectrum of suffering to be had out there.

Interview and Video Editing Work on Cyclingdirt:

I travel, race, take video, and do interviews for Cyclingdirt. A typical day will involve waking up at 5AM, interviewing racers for an hour, racing my mountain bike for 5 hours, interviewing racers for another hour or so, then sitting in a car outside a closed coffee shop, poaching their WiFi, editing hours of video, scarfing down a cold burrito, and then getting back to the house when everyone else is already asleep. Repeat.

Brek Epic Blogs on MountainBike.com:

In the summer of 2010, I was lucky enough to be chosen as a Blogger Grant recipient for the Breck Epic, a six day stage race in Breckenridge, Colorado. It was absolutely, freaking horrible, but I loved every minute of it. I blogged all about it for Mountainbike.com during the event.

Article And Reviews for BikeRumor:

Much of the material I am presented with at BikeRumor is not inherently all that exciting in any way. I try to take something that might otherwise be boring and dry and make it into something funny and interesting. Sometimes this causes the clientele consternation, mostly because they really just want me to put up a picture of some shiny, expensive, new thing and go "Hey you! Look at this shiny, expensive, new thing!"

Articles Done Pro Bono for NEMBA Singletracks:

NEMBA (The New England Mountain Bike Association), are the guys that make riding in New England happen. They advocate for land access, make sure trails stay open, maintain existing trails, and build amazing new ones. I try to get out to their events when I can, and I show my support by writing stuff for their member magazine occasionally. It's pretty sweet, NEMBA president Phillip Keyes let's me do whatever the hell I want to do over there.

Podcasts:

An under-utilized talent of mine is voice-over. After listening to these, you might think that it should be more under-utilized than it already is.

Dirt Rag:

I have written exactly one thing for Dirt Rag (though I'd like to write more), it was about the SSUSA/SSAZ race in Tucson, Arizona. Since they were nice/stupid enough to pay me real money for writing silly words, I will not be republishing the piece out of respect to them (and perhaps for legal reasons as well).

Race Promotion:

And hey, I don't just make stuff up and do crazy things on the internet, I actually do things that are real too. Things like co-co-promoting the most bad-ass-awesome grassroots 'cross race this side of Portland (that would be Oregon, not Maine). It's called the Ice Weasels Cometh.
Of course I do some of my best work here at the Big Bikes Blog, so check out the Big Bikes Top X on the sidebar for some of the more popular posts.

Wow, look at all the awesome stuff I can do! It is just nuts. Seriously. You or someone you know should hire me to do something. My perfectly reasonable aspiration is to be put in horrible situations where I am entirely miserable and be forced to write about them.

Life Cycles and 500 Feral Macaque Monkeys In Heat

Life Cycles is good, definitely the closest thing to Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, I've ever seen in a mountain bike film, both in a visual and auditory way. But I'm not sure I want too much Koyaanisqatsi mixed in with my mountain biking. A little bit is alright, but throw in too much Koyaanisqatsi and you've got an unwatchable, arty, piece of crap.

What does the above photo have to do with Koyaanisqatsi...I mean Life Cycles? First off, why do I keep linking to Koyaanisqatsi? Well, because I can't spell Koyaanisqatsi to save my f—in' life, so it's way easier to just cut and paste the already linked word. I'm not being clever, it's not that I've linked each, individual one to some random (probably illegal Belgian midget porn) site...except maybe that last one there.

Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Cycles. That's what they should have called the film.

So ya, the picture. I'm covering the Cyclesmart International Cyclocross race in North-AMP-ton on Sunday. Mr. Cyclingdirt himself, Colt "45 It Works Every Time" McElwaine dropped his pretty pimped out Jeep at my house so I could get out to western, Mass. It was pissing rain earlier tonight so I opted to take the Jeep to the theater for the premier of Life Cycles (that we will eventually get down to talking about...someday). That, is my "I'm driving Colt's car like Kowalski" face. It's the same face I'll be using while I'm getting sweet footie of the races at CSI (that's what they call Cyclesmart International) by driving Colt's Trail Rated Jeep all over Look Park, chasing racers around the course, making sure to run down lapped riders who fall victim to the 80% rule.

There just isn't enough Death Race 2000 (Carradine, not Statham) in modern cyclocross. And for that matter, there's never been close to enough Commando: The Musical in cyclocross. Shoot, that one deserves an embed.

    Thanks Unlikely Words

I don't think there's much we can do about all that, but, all I know is that if I were Adam Myerson and I were running CSI, I would run the scale-model train they have at Look Park DURING the race...and I would fill it with feral macaque monkeys in heat...and douse the riders with buckets of macaque monkey pheromones...and just see what happened. But, of course, I'm not Adam Myerson, I don't have 2500 Facebooks friends, most of whom I have not only met in real life but totally boned (even the elderly heterosexual men and lesbians), so I don't get to make calls like that. Or, in his case: texts like that.

"Hi, itz Jazzy. I'd lIk 2 ordr 500 feral macaque munkEz n heat
& 40 gallons of macaque pheromones."

But Life Cycles was gorgeous, not without serious problems, that require serious talking about... but I think I'm going to quit while I'm ahead, and do a post 100% dedicated to actually talking about Life Cycles in real life later...perhaps later today even.

Video, Rodeos, and The Zombie Plague

    Visit cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

At the moment I'm still working on getting all the Granogue footage sorted out for Cyclingdirt. I still have to, I say have to, edit vids of the Elite Masters and the Elite Women from day two. The Elite Men day two vid IS up. Somehow I managed to capture the back-and-forth, one-on-one battle for the win between Jesse Anthony and Swiss U23 rider, Valentin Scherz. Valentin overcame what looked to be an insurmountable gap and then Anthony flipped the script, taking it right down to the line to win by a quarter wheel.

I did take a little break to go over and talk about goats on Bike Rumor.

Now I have to take a bigger break and take the frickin' T (that's the subway for you non-Boston folk) over to Newton to get the IBC van for a bike rodeo I'm working tomorrow AM in Needham. I never miss a chance to hog tie and brand children while getting paid. I usually try to avoid the train at all costs, I feel like riding the train is how people get sick, but since I'm the one who's sick right now...screw it, I'll be like patient zero for whatever Zombie-Flu-Plague I'm carrying.

    Something Stronger Than Coffee

    Visit cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

The flower-power Pedro's Sprinter van piloted by Dave Wilcox dropped me off at my house at about 1:30Am last night. I went down to Delaware for the Granogue cross races sick and sleep-deprived and only "improved" on that position. I ran on nothing but Dunkin Donuts and Coca Cola all weekend long. On Sunday morning I said to Dave, "Now I understand why doctors do so many drugs. I just have to talk to people today, if I had to perform surgery on someone...I would need something stronger than coffee."

All the interviews are up on Cyclingdirt. Of course there's also Pete Bradhshaw's helmet-cam video from day one (above). He was so inspired by the wearing of the camera that he went right to the front of the race on lap one, all the riders parted like the red sea for him and the rider whose wheel he was holding, it was kind of amazing.

I'll have helmet-cam stuff from Wilcox and highlight videos from both days up later today.

There's Something I've Been Meaning To Tell You

When I was in fifth grade my parents had another child. A couple weeks after IT was born my mom came to pick me up at school with IT in tow. My teacher, Mr. Bishop, seemed shocked when he saw my mom holding a relatively newborn baby, "Thom how come you didn't tell us you have a new baby brother?" "It didn't occur to me" I replied, but in fifth grade-speak it probably came out more like "Um...I dunno."

And that's kind of how I feel right now. I have entirely failed to mention the fact that I will be going down to Delaware to cover the big weekend of cross racing at Granogue for Cyclingdirt. I was going to be going down with the guys from Embrocation in their new Sprinter-type van, but due to an insurance snafu, the van is not going to be street legal in time. Instead I will be bumming a ride with the dudes from Pedro's. This will mark the first time that I have covered an event that I am not racing in as well. I will be doing my best Colt impression all weekend long, I even have his semi-legit, big HD camera, but shit...I better get some lifts in my Vans.

And hey, if you aren't checking my totally sweet Twitter feed or my Facebook status updates like the other three people who read this thing, I wrote a little something about a nutty IF Single-Speed with a Niner fork made special for SSWCs over on the Bike Rumor.

I'm feelin' a little under the weather, so I am going to crash instead of staying up babbling, but we'll have lots to talk about Monday...or Tuesday.

    Best of Cyclingdirt Coverage

    Visit beta.cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

Alright, so I'm gonna chill out for yet another day and fall back on the veritable bounty of Cyclingdirt coverage I amassed over the past week. Last night was the first time I really got to sit down and watch a lot of it. Much of that stuff got posted without any kind of screening, just my memory of the interview. And they sure as shit weren't edited in any way...the interviews that is; the helmet-cam stuff is heavily edited, particularly the vids for stages 4 and 5. One thing I learned from watching all those videos is that I need to focus more on, well...focusing more. The Flip Mino (which is still on loan from the Reuters collection) I'm using has a very narrow angle on the lens, you really have to pay attention to where you're aiming the thing or, in my case, not aiming the thing — like, during the mid-point of this video where I linger a little too long on Dejay Birtch's hairy nipples.

OK so...guide to Cyclingdirt coverage. The above video is of Eric Purdue, post stage 5. Eric Purdue is awesome. He is hilarious. He is the man. But apparently some people don't get him — people like Joeseph, a dude who commented below Eric's video on Cyclingdirt. I don't like talking trash (real trash) in comments sections of blogs and I don't even walk on the same side of the street as those angry-forum-folks. Incidentally, speaking of trash, did you know that the Spanish word for trash is "chatarra?" Unlike me, you probably did. I learned this from my Guatemalan housemate in Brevard, Charlie. I guess he saw a house with a yard full of a bunch of cars and refrigerators and other assorted detritus while he was driving through Brevard and he wondered why the people who lived there kept all their "chatarra."

But back to Eric Purdue and the angry commenter...so this is what the guy said:

I'd like to show this doucebag some mercy on my own handbuilt, pristine, kick donkey ass trails!! I built Pisgah when I wasn't building my own shittt. I do like the follow your dreams bit, Nothing says follow your dreams like getting your ass handed to you by the first loser!!

    - Joeseph

One trait that pretty much all people who spout ungrounded, venomous comments on the internet share is this: they can neither spell nor construct a coherent sentence. Case in point, this guy can't spell "douchebag" or "shit." Hell, he can't even spell his own name. Who spells Joseph "Joeseph." Yes I am a Thom who spells his name with an H, but at least Spellcheck doesn't flag my name when I write it. I hope, for Joeseph's sake, that he never crosses paths with Eric Purdue. Eric may not the the fastest cyclist, but if I had to choose the person I would least like to fight out of the PMBSR field, it would be him, hands down. If Joe-seph ever did the PMBSR I'm afraid he wouldn't make it past morning check in:

Joeseph: Yup, I'm just gonna sign in here, that's me right there, Joeseph with an extra E for no reason at all. Let me go ahead and...

Eric Purdue: (Standing behind JoEseph in his black and white ensemble, looking like a threatening Panda): You say your name was Joseph-with-an-extra-E?

Joeseph: That's right, you got a problem with that you shitt head, you deuce-bag?

What would follow is not a scene I can describe here. I'll just say that in homicide cases the term "debris footprint" is not usually applied. For this an exception would have to be made.

The rest of these are going to have to be a little less involved.

Below a man named "Shrimper" describes what it's like to inhabit a rancid squirrel suit for six hours in the humid 80-something degree heat of the Pisgah Forest:

    Shrimper:

The highlight of this video comes near the end, when Ozzie Open womens' leader Claire Garcia-Webb takes a dive off the podium...sober:

    Stage 4 Helmet Cam

This is my most heavily edited helmet-cam vid and the tunes are wicked good. It's also got highlights from the the kids race and the pie-eating contest. Good stuff:

    Stage 5 Helmet Cam:

    Visit beta.cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

The best part of this one is when a kid asks Jeremiah Bishop if he's a pro rider, he says "I try" and she says "You're AWESOME!":

    Visit beta.cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

What can I say, his name is Butt and he's the funniest Australian this side of Ronnie Johns. You also might learn a little bit about how my race went from this one:

    Visit beta.cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

And this, this is rad. I mounted a Helmet Hero to the head tube of local hot-shot-ripper Cory Rimmer's bike. The dude is 20-years-old and he had no problem chasing Bishop or Pearce or whoever else he felt like chasing. He wasn't racing, he was just out there training. He must be kinda scary when he races. Oh, and thanks to my buddy Bullit at Cycle 9 in Carrboro it has the best soundtrack of any of these videos. I tried to keep the music local as much as I could: Southern Culture on The Skids, Superchunk, Flat Duo Jets, and...The Monks!:

Shoot, I wrote a lot for someone who wasn't planning on writing anything.

    Sick and Tired

    Photo Cred: Brad O Allen

But not necessarily in that order. Yes I came home sick from The Pisgah Mountain Bike Stage Race, but I don't think I'd be feelin' all that well even if I were healthy. Riding 175 miles with 40,000 feet of elevation gain in five days will do that to a man...or me. It's not like I've been treating my body all that well this season, if one bout of sickness is the price I have to pay, I'll take it. I know things have been a little quiet here lately but that's only because it's gotten very noisy over on the PMBSR Cyclingdirt page. And speaking of noisy, there's nothing like flying with a chest and head cold next to a screeching-like-it's-being-put-through-a-woodchipper-baby to make you want to pull the emergency exit latch and fling yourself into stratosphere. Of course it could have been worse, I could have been wedged in next to this guy:

Seats on planes should be sold like real estate. If you pay for a house with a one car garage and you have two cars, you don't get to put your second car in your neighbor's garage. This guy's "second car" was a first model year Hummer comprised of a flaccid, sweaty, ass; taking up a good third of his neighbor's seat. At the very least big boy should have paid the dude to his right some rent in the form of a cocktail.

I have no idea why I got sick. I mean, my days down in Brevard went like this:

    • Wake up at 6:30 Am or earlier
    • Drink more coffee than the other five people in the house COMBINED
    • Take establishing shots at the venue while getting ready to race
    • Race hard for 4-5 hours
    • Hang out at the venue doing interviews for an hour-and-a-half
    • Do not pass shower, head straight to the cafe to edit vids for 2-3 hours
    • Drive over to the awards ceremony/movie night and try to edit vids while being semi-social
    • Go back to the then closed cafe to pirate their Wi Fi and eat dinner in the car, in a dark parking lot while posting my videos to Cyclingdirt
    • Get home at 10:30-11, drink a couple High Life's to unwind
    • Sleep badly for 4-6 hours
    • Do it again only with progressively less vigor and progressively more pain

It'll pick up here as the week goes on, although I still have lots of "sweet footy" to edit and post on Cyclingdirt.

And, if you're in the neighborhood and you care about access to The Fells, please attend this meeting:

    Trails Action Alert!

On Monday, September 20th, 2010 DCR will be presenting their Draft Trails Plan for the Middlesex Fells at a public meeting at the McGlynn School in Med- ford, MA.

We need a strong presence from the MTB community at this meeting! Anti-MTB groups have continued to hammer DCR against any equitable changes to MTB access in the Fells and we need to make sure our presence, voices and rights to singletrack in the Fells are *strongly* represented.

Where: McGlynn School in Medford (adjacent to Hormel Stadium)

When: Monday, September 20th, 6:30-8:00pm Action: Get yourself there! Tell your friends.

    Visit beta.cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

Well too F—in' bad kid, cuz you got at least two more days of video and then...and then I start TALKING about it. You are screwed. Unless, of course, you like-ah the Pisgah Mountain Bike Stage Race. In that case, you're stoked.

Above is the stage two helmet cam.
I'm in the process of uploading stuff from Stage 3, check the official PMBSR page on Cylingdirt.

    Visit beta.cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

    It's late for a post, I know.

It's been a long day and this is the shortest day of this five day race. Oh, and the easiest. Like getting shot in the gut is less painful than getting shot in the foot, just like that.

Above are my helmet cam highlights for stage one. The rest of the coverage can be found right freaking HERE.

Now I have to go home and take a shower so Garth doesn't kick me out of our rather small room for stinking like the ass end of a dead rhino.

Things are way to crazy and tight for a proper, yammering, train-wreck of a blog post this morning. So what I give you is this: my Pisgah Mountain Stage Race Preview on Cyclingdirt. Get used to looking at my contorted face and listening to my umming, aahing and nervous throat clearing, 'cause that's what's in store for you this week you poor bastards.

    High Cascades Helmet Cam

    Visit beta.cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

After about 39 hours of consciousness, the last of which I pretty much hallucinated through, I finally got a bunch of sleep. I still look like baboons punched me in the eyes though.

Not sure how much more blawging is happening this week, but I'll be back next week for sure to begin the hyping of the Breck Epic stuff. Still don't know which major-cycling-media-outlet I'm blogging for or how it all works, all I know is I'm flying to Denver Wednesday and it doesn't seem all that far away.

High Cascades 100 Videos on Cyclingdirt

Sorry, no action here today. I haven't slept since 6AM YESTERDAY. All the hot bike on bike action is over on Cyclingdirt, so check it out.

Oh, and I will be taking a couple days off from der blawg. So much to tell, but no time to tell it.

    The More I Do

The Less I have to say.

That's not really true, I have plenty to say, I just don't have the time or energy to say it. It's not even like I've replaced blogging time with sleeping time, you should see my eyes, I look like one of the zombies from 28 Days Later. I leave for Oregon at 6:25AM tomorrow and get back on a plane in Oregon at 10:15 Sunday night, but I won't get home 'til 10:30AM. Yup, I got the cheap seats. I'm hoping to post some pre-race, smack-talk vids to Cyclingdirt by Friday night, so look for that. The one where I ask Dejay Birtch about his gear ratio should be good, I might have to figure out how to bleep stuff.

    Visit beta.cyclingdirt.org for more Videos

Here are my excuses for the not-really-blogging today:

1.) I spent all day editing video from the 101, you can check all of it out HERE.

    and

2.) M is watching Hot Tub Time Machine, not some cooking competition show...it's really distracting.

Below is the helmet cam video, you don't have to watch it all the way through, but I'm tellin' ya, the last few seconds are the best.

Colt may move this video by the time I wake up (which won't be early, it's 2AM),

The full report will be up, hopefully tomorrow, probably on the 29er Crew blog.
Is that definitive enough for ya?
The short version is that I rode 52 miles in something like six hours and forty five minutes for a total of 8,270 feet of elevation gain. It hurt like hell, but it went really, really well.

    See you tomorrow.

Lumberjack 100 Helmet Cam and Video Report

    Cycling Videos on CyclingDirt

Got back late last night from the last leg of the Michigan trip. Drove up from the Finger Lakes after a nice visit at my Auntie Ann's. A cold swim in Keuka Lake helped shake off some of the hurt from the Lumberjack, but I definitely have a whole lot more shaking off to do. That, and sleeping, lots of sleep to catch up on, even more so than usual. I am a hurtin' eunuch. That is the expression right...hurtin' eunuch?

No time to put the proper report together today, so you'll have to watch my video report if you haven't already. Well, you don't have to, there isn't going to be a test on this stuff. It's sort of like one of my blog posts, only with more ums and buts and aaahs and teeth...more big teeth for sure.

The helmet cam thing was frustrating this time around. More time on the bike means more time to screw up filming. I pulled the classic, Helmet Hero mistake of leaving the thing on when I thought it was off, using up all the memory on total crap. I did the best I could with it, practicing my editing. Lots of nice sun light through the trees shots. 'Cause that was what I was going for...sunlight through the trees shots. "Aw dude, I can't wait to see all that sick footage I took of the sunlight coming through the trees!" Sorry to Tim Finkel, Eddie O'dea, and all the other guys who might have thought they were busting all those sick moves out there for the papparazzi.

The EFTA Pinnacle Helmet Hero Video
    (with captions)

    It's not here, it's HERE.

I spent way, way too long trying to sync up Matty O's sick dance moves to The Fall's version of "Strychnine." Wait for it.

Crazy day and the bike donation thing continues tomorrow, gotta crash.

I'll sleep during the drive to Michigan Thursday.
